LG: larger OLED TVs, boosted by the A9 processor and a redesigned WebOS

LG larger OLED TVs boosted by the A9 processor and

A few hours after unveiling its new generation of OLED EX panel, LG is giving pride of place to televisions… which will not be equipped with them. Indeed, the G2 and C2 models which have just been unveiled at CES in Las Vegas will both run under a 2021 vintage EVO panel, the same one that fitted the G1 that we were able to test.
In 2022, the novelty on the heart of the OLED range from LG is definitely not to be found in panel technology. Indeed, in addition to the innovations specific to each model, the Korean manufacturer takes the opportunity to increase the maximum size of its diagonal to 97 inches. At the same time, the brand will also offer a 42-inch model, in addition to the 47-inch version which was the “small size” from last year.

But the main novelty of the latest OLED televisions is their new processor, or rather the fifth evolution of this A9 which is one of the references of the TV market. As with Samsung for the NEO QLED, the gain in processor power is used in two specific tasks.
On the one hand, upscaling, which promises to go to a higher level, especially on 8K models, and, on the other hand, on image processing. Indeed, like its Korean competitor, LG claims to have improved the impression of depth and relief in the image thanks to specific work by the processor on each area.
As for the sound part, the AI Sound Pro mode will offer a upmix 7.1.2, i.e. the ability to transform a stereo audio signal into a multichannel.

Always at the forefront of gaming

The game part will benefit from a new “Game Optimizer”, that is to say a mode specific to video games and giving access to the main settings (VRR, ALLN, 4K 120 Hz, etc.), but also to preset modes according to the type of game.

The other novelty comes from the fact that from now on, LG televisions will have HDMI 2.1 ports at 48 gigabits. Indeed, the 2021 versions of the brand’s OLEDs were limited to 40 gigabits, which in practice does not change anything given current speeds.
In reality, it is above all a question of preparing for the future on the management of audio and video signals and no longer giving way to criticism with an unnecessary limitation.

WebOS: up to six profiles per TV

This is a feature that concerns all of the brand’s “Smart TVs” which will be launched in 2022. They will be equipped with a new version of the home interface, WebOS. It extends the changes observed last year, namely a greater place devoted to the recommendation of content, but also more personalization for the user.
The illustration of this greater freedom is the possibility now offered to have up to six user profiles. In other words, each family member could have an account for access to the TV and their own recommendations. The risk of being offered both the last episode of “Peppa Pig” and “Don’t Look up” on Netflix on WebOS will therefore be reduced.

Finally, like what Samsung offers, version 22 of WebOS allows you to display an “Ambient” mode, that is to say a visual animation, artistic work, personal photo or simply the time and the weather forecast, instead of standby mode.

G2, C2, LG’s new OLED ambassadors

All of these features should equip both the G2 and the C2, the two new models announced by the manufacturer. But these also change from a hardware point of view compared to their predecessors, the G1 and C1. Indeed, the C2 adopts a new composite fiber frame which would reduce its weight by half compared to last year’s model. The same goes for the G2 which also sees its rear face evolve allowing it to go towards even more finesse.

Finally, LG’s latest announcement concerning its models should delight future buyers since it concerns their price. The fall in the price of OLED panels should ultimately benefit the user with 55-inch models which could approach 1,000 euros at the start of marketing.
On this point, it will probably be necessary to wait a few weeks to have a confirmation of the rates in force for France. For the rest, the G2 will be available in 55, 65, 77, 83 and 97 inches. As for the C2, it will display diagonals of 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches. Their marketing is scheduled for spring.
