LFI and the PS agree on “an agreement in principle” for a union of the left

LFI and the PS agree on an agreement in principle

Negotiations for the legislative elections of June 12 continue in France. After the agreement with the Communist Party on Tuesday, after two days of uninterrupted negotiations, the situation seems to be unblocking between rebellious France and the Socialist Party. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party has just announced that an agreement in principle has been reached.

La France insoumise (LFI) and the Socialist Party (PS) agreed overnight on what had been blocking the main two days: the distribution of electoral constituencies. A crucial issue for the Socialists who absolutely wanted to keep their outgoing deputies. They had 24, and they wanted their political weight to be taken into account in several regions, in particular Ile-de-France, Occitanie and Hauts-de-France.

There will have been many annoyances and gnashing of teeth during the two long days of negotiations between the Insoumis and the Socialists. But everyone finally let go. The Mélenchon camp has given up offering the PS only a handful of constituencies. The Socialists will lead the union in 70 of them.

PS internal storm

But symbolic areas, such as the last Parisian constituency in the hands of the PS, fall into the purse of the Insoumis. It is also a goldsmith’s work for the joint press release validating the agreement on the program; it is still being drafted. Result: the vote in the National Council of the PS, the final stamp of the union, could only take place tomorrow.

In the meantime, the socialist leadership must manage the internal storm. Former Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve will leave the PS, as will many supporters of social democracy who feel betrayed by the rapprochement with the radical left. This current could be reborn in a new party: the mayor of Le Mans, Stéphane Le Foll, has already announced that he was ready to lead the legislative battle by relying on dissident candidacies from the PS.

Local political figures to whom Emmanuel Macron’s Republic in March also makes eyes. And on the side of the Walkers, negotiations continue also. A first list of nominations should be published today or tomorrow. For the full cast, we will have to wait.
