Letting your child farm and level in WoW is so 2005

Over the past 20 years, World of Warcraft has enabled many parents and their children to experience the world of Azeroth together. And yes, sometimes it involves someone farming gold and experience for the other.

Who farms for whom? If you play WoW and have kids, you’re probably familiar with the not-so-serious joke: “Let your kids farm gold, experience points, honor, or something else for you!” That may be a cliché, but it’s said to have been heard here and there in 20 years of World of Warcraft.

With the launch of the current expansion The War Within, we stumbled upon a beautiful story from the community in which exactly this cliché was turned on its head: The daughter takes revenge for a childhood memory and lets her mum farm for her.

The new WoW expansion The War Within is luring many players back to Azeroth – here is a trailer:

Who is it about? On X, “ryn ♡” shared a picture of her mum playing WoW. The snapshot was captioned:

“My mom was the one who taught me how to play WoW when I was 4 and now she wanted to play again so I forced her to quest for me in The War Within🫡. This is the opposite of parents who use their kids to farm mounts for them lol but I love her so much 🥹❤️‍🩹. She was so happy to play WoW again.”

The happiness was to be marred by some virtual deaths. In a second post on X, “ryn ♡” explains:

“I explained to her what the skills did, but she kept dying. So I tried and I died and I realized we were fighting elite enemies. So I apologized with “I’m SO sorry, it’s not that you’re bad, they’re just too powerful” and she said “see, I’m not bad”. Now I know where I got this gamer mentality from, LOL.”

How does the community react to this little story?

  • wasp writes on X: “This is such a sweet story.”
  • Ian comments on X: “I’m jealous! Neither of my parents were interested in gaming, I got into it on my own. That’s probably why I have a very different experience than many of my current players.”
  • sweets tried it too (via X): “My dad raised me playing Blizzard games since I was a toddler. I’ve been trying to convince him to play a WoW again but he just doesn’t have time for MMOs lol. This is so sweet.”
  • What was it like for MeinMMO editor Karsten? My parents never had much to do with games. The only thing I could get my father to sit in front of a console was Sim City for the SNES. Things are completely different for me and my kids now, of course. The little one did his first successful laps in Mario Kart 8 at the weekend. The big one is currently keen on Minecraft and Goat Simulator 3.

It’s still too early for MMORPGs for the two kids, so I still have to farm gold and XP in The War Within myself. 😉 Another feel-good story from the World of Warcraft community can be found here: “The community isn’t toxic at all” – WoW newbie is amazed that everyone is so nice
