US President Joe Biden, a new Afghanistan step has come. In the letter he sent to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Biden included the statements of “I declare to you my intention to remove Afghanistan from the status of an important non-NATO ally”. Afghanistan was recognized by the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, as a “significant non-NATO ally” in 2012. There are 20 countries that the USA has recognized as “important non-NATO allies” to date.
LETTER FROM BIDEN TO CONGRESS
US President Joe Biden announced his decision in a letter to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
In his letter, Biden said, “I declare to you my intention to remove Afghanistan from the status of an important non-NATO ally, in accordance with Article 517 of the 1961 Foreign Aid Law.”

THERE ARE 20 COUNTRIES
There are 20 countries that the USA has recognized as “important non-NATO allies” to date.
With a law passed for the first time in the country in 1987, then-US President Ronald Reagan included Australia, Egypt, Israel, Japan and South Korea in this category.
From the Gulf region, Bahrain and Kuwait were included in this category by former US President George W. Bush.
Lastly, US President Biden put Qatar and Colombia in this category.
