Leonardo DiCaprio was only the 3rd choice (!) for Inception after 2 absolute mega-stars declined

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is a sci-fi blockbuster, confusion and star cinema rolled into one. The film starring Leonardo DiCaprio was released in 2010. He plays the dream mechanic Dom Cobb and created several memes for eternity. It could have gone very differently. Difficult to imagine, but the search for a leading man didn’t lead directly to DiCaprio. You can currently stream Inception on Netflix with a flat rate.

Brad Pitt in Inception? Who should star in Inception before Leonardo DiCaprio

Inception was quite a risky project. The script was difficult to explain even for those involved. It’s a convoluted process in which thieves penetrate the dreams of their victims in order to steal ideas there – or to plant new ideas. Although Christopher Nolan’s name was well known in Hollywood at the time, it was not associated with commercially successful and original blockbusters to the same extent as it is today. That only started with Inception, after which Nolan could basically do whatever he wanted. (Buy Inception in 4K on Amazon*)

Before filming Inception, it was difficult to convince the big stars to participate in the film. The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2010 that Nolan first offered the script to Brad Pitt. He requested a response within the next 48 hours. But Brad Pitt didn’t want to.

Nolan tried the next big shot: Will Smith, who was arguably the biggest name in the industry at the time. But even Will Smith had no interest in the oddball sci-fi conundrum-that would become a modern classic (not his only such misjudgment). Leonardo DiCaprio was the next address Nolan headed for. He agreed.

Inception became a pop culture sensation with Leonardo DiCaprio

From garbage to masterpiece: we rank all Christopher Nolan films

DiCaprio showed the right nose. Inception grossed $825 million worldwide (Box Office Mojo) and won four Oscars. Inception is now included in many lists of the best films of the current millennium and is generally regarded as a prime example for blockbusters that can be successful even without a template or franchise connection. 13 years later, film fans are still puzzling over the end. Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio could not have hoped for more.
