The two Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have made a total of six films together so far. They all truly deserve their place in film history, even if the director later regrets making a joint thriller masterpiece.
However, two of their collaborations particularly stand out. These are Departed – Among Enemies and The Wolf of Wall Street, both of which are being shown back to back on TV tonight. Of all Scorsese’s feature films only GoodFellas rated better by the Moviepilot community.
Primetime TV tip: Martin Scorsese finally won an Oscar for Departed, even though it is “only” a remake
Scorsese was unsuccessfully nominated for best director at the Oscars five times, before finally winning him over for Departed in 2007. The fact that the film is a remake of the Chinese gangster thriller Infernal Affairs – The Eighth Hell seems a little strange.
Scorsese’s new film is in no way inferior to the strong original. The violent war of nerves between undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) and police officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), who is secretly spying for mafia boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), is as captivating as it is fast-paced.
In Departed, the boundaries between good and evil are constantly being pushed back. Scorsese visibly enjoys this confusion and leaves his film always hitting new hooks with surprising twists and turns. The result is simply outstanding suspense cinema with scenes that will remain etched in your memory forever.
The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio is a 3-hour rush without a break
Seven years after Departed, Scorsese released his most successful film to date, The Wolf of Wall Street. Undoubtedly another masterpiece, but one that is completely different than the cop thriller in question. Here the directing legend picks up the pace again and relies primarily on absurd humor.
The film tells that Scandalous true story of stockbroker Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), who makes immense wealth through his crooked dealings on Wall Street, but soon has the FBI breathing down his neck. The fact that Belfort also leads an excessive life full of parties and drugs doesn’t make his situation any easier.
Lead actor DiCaprio sweeps through the film like a force of nature and delivers with his completely unleashed performance probably the best performance of his career away. Belfort’s hedonistic lifestyle frightens and fascinates at the same time, which Scorsese illustrates with a rush of quickly edited images. Three incredibly entertaining hours fly by.
