The Edmonton Oilers have signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year extension worth $112 million. It is the highest annual salary paid to a player in NHL history.

The new player contract guarantees the star forward an average annual salary of 14 million dollars, which is the most in the history of the NHL.
The German, who previously earned 8.5 million per season, also surpasses the former salary king of the series, Toronto by Auston Matthewswhich clears 13.25 million annually.
However, in terms of total value, it is not the most valuable of all time in the dollar league, because Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin signed a 13-year, 124-million-dollar contract extension in 2009 when he was 22 years old.

Draisaitl and Connor McDavid helped the Edmonton Oilers reach their seventh Stanley Cup final last season, even though the Florida Panthers eventually took the NHL championship.
Draisaitl was the NHL’s 2020 MVP and would have become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Another Oilers star, McDavid, is expected to sign an extension next July.
