The Truth Commission for the Sami people has been without chairman since October last year. Then Anders Lidén chose to resign from his post when he meant that they had different views on how the work would go about it.
In February, the government proposed a name for the Sami Parliament’s steering group – but it was then a unanimous no.
But now they have finally agreed and on Tuesday Lena Nyberg was presented as new chairman and she began her new assignment on April 8.
Until October last year, she was Director General of the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society (MUCF). Previously, she has also been a child ombudsman and CEO of the Archipelago Foundation.
Liljestrand: “experienced leader”
– It is with pleasure that I can announce that Lena Nyberg has been appointed new chairman of the Truth Commission. Lena Nyberg is a experienced leader with long experience of working with human rights issues. The Truth Commission has an important assignment and it is very positive that there is now a chairman in place, says Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand in a press release.
Since 2021, Truth Commission has been commissioned to map and review the policy that has been pursued towards the Sami in a historical perspective and its consequences for the Sami people. The assignment must be finalized by December 1 this year.
