Dick Axelsson is ready to play in Djurgården again.
Now the signing is celebrated – by Leif Boork.
“Exciting!”, he writes.
Dick Axelsson is one of Swedish hockey’s great profiles. He has always been a good scorer and top player in the SHL, but he has also made a name for himself as a real talking bag off the ice, often delivering nice comments. He has ended his hockey career twice before, but is now back for a third stay in Djurgåden.
Noticed the comeback
It was clear on Thursday, when Djurgården announced after several weeks of speculation that Dick Axelsson, now 37, is ready to play in the Hocekyallsvenskan next season. Dick Axelsson most recently comes from playing with Väsby in Hockeyettan, but ended his career in October. Dick Axelsson has otherwise been seen quite a bit in the media in various roles, but is now coming back to help Djurgården back to the SHL.
Dick Axelsson has scored a total of 148 points in 224 games in the Dif shirt.
– My goal when I came back here in 2018 was to win SM gold with Djurgården. It is clearly one step later, now all the focus is on helping the association up to the SHL again. I am extremely excited about this trip, says Axelsson about the return.
Boork’s honest words
And of course the signing has received a lot of attention in Swedish hockey. Leif Boork, the former head coach, has made a name for himself by usually being critical of things in Swedish hockey on his Twitter account. When the signing of Axelsson was announced, however, Boork, somewhat unexpectedly, chose to take the positive side.
“Exciting!”, he writes.
When people question Boork, and for example ask why Djurgården doesn’t invest in juniors instead of a “hockey pensioner”, Boork answers with a comparison to Joel Lundqvist:
“DIF has a lot of talented juniors and they invest in them. Having some experienced foxes, provided they are motivated and well trained, can make a good mix. Frölunda had Joel longer than Dick’s ex!”, he writes.
