For more than 25 years, the label launched blockbuster albums with artists such as Carole King, Peter Frampton, the Carpenters, Janet Jackson and Sting.
Jerry Moss teamed up with Herb Alpert and founded A&M in 1962 with an initial capital of $200 and created one of the music industry’s great success stories.
After initially specializing in “easy listening” music such as trumpeter Alpert’s records with the group Tijuana Brass, the label began releasing rock music from the mid-1960s, featuring artists such as Joe Cocker, Procul Harum and Free.
In the late 1980s, the company ran into financial problems and was sold to Polygram for $500 million. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss left A&M entirely in 1993.
