The Canadian film industry is overshadowed by its big neighbor Hollywood, but still makes a name for itself with small but fine cult productions. One of them is this Horror house classic The Horror, published in 1980 starring George C. Scott, which you can watch tonight. And that’s worth it.
The story of The Horror is supposedly based on real experiences
Author Russell Hunter says he was inspired by real experiences in a villa when he came up with the basics of the story of The Horror. Film legend George C. Scott (Patton, Dr. Strange) plays the New York composer John Russell, who moves into a sprawling estate near Seattle after the death of his wife and daughter.
Soon, inexplicable events and phenomena begin to occur. Together with local Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere), John tracks down the ghost of a six-year-old boy who was murdered by his own father while he was still alive. The horrific story extends to the present day and claims its victims.

Steven Spielberg used The Horror to prepare Poltergeist
Former Movie Pilot author Rajko Burchardt wrote in his commentary on the film:
Arranged with attention to detail, extraordinary care in pacing and virtuosic moments of horror Peter Medak pulls out all the stops of skillful genre ultra-art: doors that open as if by magic, mirrors that shatter for inexplicable reasons, a creaking wheelchair that happily pushes itself through the old property. And then there was a secret upper floor where really bad things happened. But: Thanks to a playful camera, effective sound design and, last but not least, the courage to be sentimental, it’s not the least bit dusty haunted house replica.
Over the years, The Horror has garnered many famous admirers. Producer Steven Spielberg is said to have shown the film to the crew several times in preparation for the haunted house hit Poltergeist, as Das Grauen director Medak revealed to IndieWire in 2018.
Martin Scorsese placed The Horror at number 6 on his list of scariest films at all (according to DailyBeast, Until the Blood Freezes was at number 1, which in turn inspired The Horror). Colleague Guillermo del Toro also called the film a masterpiece and listed it among his favorite ghost stories.
