The Classic Offensive mode, which the Counter-Strike community has been waiting for a long time, has been removed from Steam by Valve without explanation.
Counter-Strike The Classic Offensive mode, which fans were eagerly awaiting, was quietly removed from Steam after eight years of development. The mod aimed to offer a nostalgic and modern experience by combining the gameplay mechanics of Counter-Strike 1.6 with the innovations of Global Offensive. However, as a result of Valve’s automatic review, the mod was removed from Steam, bringing the future of the project to an uncertain point. The developers stated that they followed all rules and received no official warnings from Valve.
Development Process of Counter-Strike Classic Offensive
Classic Offensive mode was opened to early access in 2016 and went through the Steam Greenlight process in 2017. The aim of the mod was to preserve the core gameplay feel of Counter-Strike 1.6 while adding innovative features from Global Offensive. Developers aimed to provide a customized gaming experience using Source tools used in games such as Portal 2. The mode was planned to be released during the 2024 holiday season, but this date was postponed to early 2025.
In a statement on social media, the developer team stated that it was disappointing that Valve removed the project from Steam without giving them any explanation. “We have worked to comply with Valve’s rules for years and have never done anything illegal. “But this feels worse than a formal ‘cease and desist’ request.”
The Counter-Strike community is reacting to Valve’s silence on this issue. WarOwl, a popular content producer, commented, “It is a huge slap in the face to the modding community that a project that has put so much effort into being shelved without any explanation.” A discussion in the /r/globaloffensive subreddit on Reddit sums up the community’s reaction: “Counter-Strike started as a mod. Valve usually hired mod developers. Please release Classic Offensive, it poses no threat to you.”
Whether Valve’s silence is an automatic review error or a sign of a new policy change is not yet known. However, the Counter-Strike community is concerned about the impact this will have on the modding community.
