Dragonheart is an adventure film, action fairy tale and dragon fantasy all in one. Released in 1996, the film was received with lukewarm reviews but quickly grew in popularity one of the most popular fantasy adventures of an entire generation. Fortunately, hardly anyone knows about the four evil sequels.
That’s what the legendary fantasy adventure Dragonheart is all about
Dragonheart revolves around the dogged dragon slayer Sir Bowen (Dennis Quaid) and his unexpected friendship with a dragon. Knight Bowen is actually supposed to teach the heir to the throne Einon to become a good king. When the boy is seriously injured in an accident, all he can do is half a dragon heart save life. In return he promises the great monster Draco that he will become an honorable and righteous king. But he doesn’t keep this promise and turns out to be a tyrant in adulthood (played brilliantly, as always, by David Thewlis).
Sir Bowen blames the half dragon heart and wants to wipe all dragons from the earth. When there is only one left, namely Draco, something develops unexpected friendship between Bowen and the alleged beastTogether they must face the terrible ruler Einon. You’re guaranteed to shed a tear at the end of the film.

In the mid-90s, the film’s dragon effects were even made with a Oscar nomination considered. Today we can only smile about it, as Draco seems more like a cute little kid’s movie hero. His charm (in the original he is even voiced by James Bond actor Sean Connery) and the interaction between Dennis Quaid and Draco are still convincing throughout the entire length.
A life-size puppet was originally made, but for cost reasons a computer-animated dragon was ultimately used in the film.
Dragonheart has received a whopping four sequels
Dragonheart director Rob Cohen did not take the director’s chair again for the dragon series. Instead, he filmed the legendary franchise starter The Fast and the Furious. The dragon epic continued, however Direct to DVD. Many Dragonheart fans don’t even know about the sequels. Since none of the stars returned and it’s a rather cheap imitation of the original, that’s probably for the better.
All 4 Dragonheart sequels that hardly anyone knows:
The first sequel came out directly on DVD four years after the original and that didn’t really attract much attention. Then there was a 15-year break until Dragonheart 3, 4 and 5 told a poor backstory to the original film.
