Because of the heat or lazing around on the beach, have you felt severe leg pain in recent weeks? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo, deciphers the causes and consequences of this symptom.
You can walk and drink water, but your legs are waging war on you. Here are the causes, consequences and solutions to overcome this painful symptom… and get back to gambolling with ease.
Leg pain: causes to identify
“Leg pain is a common problem that can have various causes and manifestations.“, the doctor confides as a preamble.
However, in summer, this phenomenon tends to worsen: the heat and exposure of the legs to the sun causes the veins to dilate. Result: the valves (these membranous folds that help venous return) no longer perform their functions.
However, according to the medical director of Doctissimo, other factors can also be at the origin of this pain, such as:
These factors can be isolated or combined.
When to consult?
According to Dr. Gérald Kierzek, there are several “red flags” that should prompt a consultation. These include the following signs:
- Persistent or worsening leg pain, “especially if accompanied by redness, warmth or swelling” ;
- “Difficulty walking or intermittent claudication (pain occurring during exercise and disappearing during rest)” ;
- “Significant varicose veins or changes in skin color on the legs;
- “Of the tingling or frequent numbness” ;
- Symptoms that do not improve “despite the usual prevention and relief measures“.
Faced with these symptoms, only a doctor will be able to establish an accurate diagnosis and agree on appropriate treatment.
Painful legs: what to do?
On a daily basis, there are various “tips” that can help relieve heavy and painful legs. Dr. Gérald Kierzek reveals the most effective ones:
- “Engage in regular physical activity such as walking, cycling or swimming” ;
- “Wear support stockings or socks” ;
- “Elevate your legs regularly, especially at night” ;
- “Alternate hot and cold showers to stimulate circulation or cold water jets from the ankles upwards (no hot baths, no underfloor heating)” ;
- “Drink enough water” ;
- “Prioritize a balanced diet, limiting processed and salty foods” ;
- “Fight against excess weight” ;
- “Avoid smoking” ;
- “Avoid high heels and tight clothing“.
What if the pain is already present? In this case, several good reflexes must be adopted.
“I recommend self-massaging your legs to stimulate circulation, applying cold in case of intense pain and using specific gels or creams.“, notes the medical director of Doctissimo, in conclusion.
