A centre-left opposition candidate is winning the presidential election in Uruguay Yamandu Orsi with almost 50 percent support. 97 percent of the votes have been counted, local election officials say.
Conservative candidate Alvaro Delgado is falling to almost 46 percent support in the second round of the elections. The centre-right Delgado has already admitted defeat.
With Orsi’s election victory, Uruguay, located in South America, tilts to the left again after five years under center-right and conservative rule.
Uruguay is one of the most stable democracies in Latin America. Voting is mandatory in the country of 3.4 million inhabitants.
