Led the police’s special sports group – now resigns

Led the polices special sports group now resigns

The action group sports, AGI, was founded in 2017 with the aim of specializing in crime that affects or is based on Swedish sports. The ten police officers who were part of the group aimed, among other things, to reduce threats and violence against club employees and work to investigate match-fixing, as well as organized football hooliganism.

The work lasted for five years, then the police in Stockholm decided that the responsibility for sports-related crime would be transferred to the National Operational Unit, Noa. A message that was justified by the fact that additional resources were needed to combat gun violence.

After that, Fredrik Gårdare continued to lead the group, which was commissioned to investigate, among other things, unsolved gang murders. Now he chooses to end his service, after more than 20 years as a police officer.

– It is obvious that the group I led will not be allowed to continue. During the five years we have been working on, we have accumulated a lot of knowledge and it would be a shame if it were not used, says Fredrik Gårdare to DN.

Farmers will continue work with precisely the sport’s problems with crime, more than that he does not want to say at an early stage.

– I see that there is a lot to do in this area and feel a responsibility towards all the athletes I have met during these years who, for example, have been exposed to unauthorized influence.

The Tryggare Sverige foundation is financed by, among others, the business community and works to prevent crime and to improve the protection and assistance to victims of crime.

– Sports have an important function in society and therefore we want to help the Swedish Sports Confederation with this. Fredrik Gårdare is a very experienced police officer and has previously achieved good results in the investments he has been involved in, says Director General Magnus Lindgren to DN.

– Initially, we will make a situation analysis to see what measures need to be taken. From Tryggare Sverige’s side, we have the opportunity to assist with research, among other things.
