Lebanon: “decent dress” required on the beach of Saïda

Lebanon decent dress required on the beach of Saida

Alcohol prohibited, “decent dress” required, in other words: no women’s jersey. These rules set up by the town hall of Saida are inscribed at the entrance to the city’s public beach, located south of Beirut. It was on this beach, in mid-May 2023, that two bathers were chased away by men led by two radical sheikhs, because they were in bathing suits. This incident divided Lebanon. In Saïda, a city with a Muslim and conservative majority, the swimsuit has been unofficially banned for decades on the public beach.
