On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the United States and Russia met in Saudi Arabia. It happened after a phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin and led to international surprise that neither Ukraine nor Europe attended the meeting.

The worst shock was still waiting.

The hours after the meeting, Trump held a press conference in Florida where he mistakenly claimed that Ukraine started the war and gave grossly incorrect figures on confidence in Zelenskyj.

The next day, Ukraine’s president replied that Trump lives in a disinformation bubble. Then it took a house to hell. On his way to the golf course, Trump wrote a post in which he called Zelenskyj dictator and questioned neither any elections was held in Ukraine despite the ongoing war.

The statements triggered a wave of criticism from European leaders, including Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson.

The hours after the meeting in Riyadh on Tuesday, Marco Rubio had a telephone call with his foreign minister in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy as well as EU’s newly appointed Foreign Manager Kaja.

“The group agreed on continued close contact while working to reach a sustainable end to the conflict in Ukraine,” US UD wrote in a statement.

According to the New York Times, who read a summary of the conversationMarco Rubio had a message other than Donald Trump. He tried to assure his allies that development does not mark an abrupt new direction in American foreign policy. The magazine writes that Rubio mainly pressed three things – two no and one yes.

Check No, Trump’s government has no plans to first reach an agreement with Russia and then put Ukraine and Europe before completing the fact.

Check No, the United States will not lift its sanctions. For this to happen, according to Rubio, a noticeable change “in the behavior from Moscow is required. However, he opened to relieve certain sanctions to a limited extent if the Russians “begin to take the steps that the United States is looking for”.

Check yes, said Rubio, the US government is fully aware that Putin may try to exploit the talks to divide the West and break his international isolation.

According to the New York Times, Rubio also explained why Ukraine and Europe did not participate in the meeting in Saudi Arabia. He assured that it was not if Trump wants to run over his allies. Instead, he said, a large part of the talks about bilateral issues between the United States and Russia was about restoring the diplomatic relations.

According to Rubio, the United States sees these negotiations as a first test of Putin’s intentions. If he cannot agree to reinstall staff at the US and Russia’s embassies, the White House considers that he is not serious about coming to an end to the war in Ukraine.

Rubio ended the conversation with the promise of keeping his European colleagues informed and called for a consensus.
