Lauri Markkanen was the best point scorer at the European Championships, when the points scored are added together. Markkanen scored 195 points in the European Championships. The second highest quotation was seen in Slovenia From Luka Doncicwho scored 182 points in the EC tournament.

Traditionally, however, the basketball crown is divided by the average per match, as it is now. The basket kingdom was captured by Greece Giannis Antetokounmpo, who scored 29.3 points per game. In this comparison too, Lauri Markkanen is high, i.e. second behind Antetokounmpo. He scored 27.9 points per game.

Markkanen’s power reading (30.4) was also the fourth highest in the European Championships. Above were only Bulgarian Alexander Vezenkov (31,2), Serbian Nikola Jokic (31.7) and number one in this statistic as well Giannis Antetokounmpo (32.7).

Antetokounmpo, Jokic and Doncic are undoubtedly among the five best players in the NBA at the moment, so Markkanen is in a really tough group with his numbers at the end of the European Championships. Jokic has been selected as the NBA’s most valuable player in the previous two seasons. In the previous two seasons, Antetokounmpo received the same award.

The highlight of Markkanen’s European Championships was when the Finnish star scored no less than 43 points against Croatia in the quarterfinals and led Finland to the top eight. Finland was among the top eight at the European Championships after a 55-year hiatus.

Markkanen still did not fit into the star five of the European Championships. Finland’s EC tournament ended with a quarter-final loss to Spain, who eventually went on to become champions. Spain defeated France 88–76 in the EC final.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Spain’s defender, was selected for the five star team Lorenzo Brown and a big player Willy Hernangomezthe center of France Rudy Gobert as well as Germany’s rear guard Dennis Schroeder.

– Markkanen has been in the speculation for the star five. Lorenzo Brown and Hernangomzez are the right choices. Gobert is hard to ignore. Antetokounmpo played hard games. I understand his choice. The choice has probably been between Markkanen and Antetokounmpo, Urheilu’s expert Pieti Poikola said freshly.

– I wouldn’t have seen any injustice in Markkanen’s choice. It should be noted that Markkanen took Finland to the same ranking as Greece.

Willy Hernangomez of the champion team was chosen as the most valuable player of the tournament. The star five and the most valuable player were chosen by accredited journalists for the games.

In the history of the European Championships, only once has a Finnish player been selected for the star five. In the 1967 EC home games Jorma Pilkevaara was in the top five of the Games, i.e. in the same European Championships, when Finland last reached the top eight.
