The current president of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region is a candidate in the 2024 legislative elections for Les Républicains. But what are Laurent Wauquiez’s chances of winning?
Laurent Wauquiez, current president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is one of the Republican candidates in the 2024 legislative elections. He formalized his candidacy in the 1st constituency of Haute-Loire on Tuesday June 11, with regional councilor Caroline Di Vicenzo as substitute. It is next Sunday June 30 and July 7 that we will know if the former president of the right-wing party will sit in the National Assembly.
“I am a candidate to carry the voice of Haute-Loire,” declared Laurent Wauquiez when formalizing his candidacy last Tuesday, “because the moment is important and difficult for our country. There is a risk of collapse of the institutions, especially struck by the level of lowering of politics, in the buzz, disconnected from the realities on the ground. “The country is above a volcano,” he also said. “We cannot remain spectators, we must defend our ideas and do so in front of the French, the only judges.”
In the event of victory, Laurent Wauquiez will have to leave the head of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional council. But for the moment, his succession is neither confirmed nor under discussion, since he continues to occupy this position while campaigning for the legislative elections. Nearby FigaroRenaud Pfeffer, vice-president in charge of security in the region, said that “the subject has not been discussed and will not be before the end of the 2nd round of the legislative elections”.
What are Laurent Wauquiez’s chances of being elected in the 2024 legislative elections?
Laurent Wauquiez is running as a candidate for the Republican party in the 1st constituency of Haute-Loire. Remember that the current president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has already been elected deputy in this constituency, first in 2004 then in 2012. From this date, he held this position until June 20, 2017. During of the last legislative elections in 2022, he had however chosen to be the deputy of Isabelle Valentin, LR candidate, who had been elected in the 1st constituency.
If Laurent Wauquiez is therefore used to winning in the first constituency of Haute-Loire, it is however the National Rally which came first during the 2024 European elections, on June 9 in the department. With 37.77% of the votes, Jordan Bardella’s list arrived far ahead of the LR list, fourth in the ranking with 10.70% of the votes in its favor in Haute-Loire.
