The prime minister of Latvia will hand over the resignation request to the country’s president on Thursday. Kariņš has served as the country’s prime minister since 2019.
Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš said on Monday that he and the country’s government will resign later this week.
– On Thursday, I will submit my and the government’s resignation application to the president, Kariņš says.
Kariņš has served as the Prime Minister of Latvia since 2019.
Karins’ party plans to present an alternative for the new prime minister on Friday.
The country’s president by Edgars Rinkevics must give the new prime minister a mandate to form a new government. The candidate’s vote of confidence will also be voted on in parliament.
Kariņš is not going to lead the new government himself, although on Friday he had said that he would form a new government and lead it. According to the Reuters news agency, Kariņš had proposed ministerial changes to the current government composition, but the government partners rejected the proposal.
Karinš’s centre-right party New Unity won the national elections in October 2022, gaining 26 seats out of 100 in the parliament, where seven parties are represented.
In addition to the prime minister’s party, the Latvian government includes the conservative National Alliance party and smaller parties that have obtained a small parliamentary majority.
The government that started in 2022 was supposed to continue until 2026.
