  • Dangerous animal parasite found in Borlänge

Can be infected – but get no symptoms. Photo: Jerker Ivarsson

A case of the dangerous and unusual parasite “the fox’s dwarf tapeworm” has been discovered in Dalarna. The parasite can cause serious illness in humans, but the risk of being affected is minimal according to SVA, TT reports.

The fox’s dwarf tapeworm is spread in the wild by microscopically small eggs coming out with the faeces of infected foxes. The intermediate host, usually a vole, then ingests the eggs through its mouth. Parasitic cysts then develop in the rodent’s internal organs. If the vole is eaten by a fox, new adult tapeworms can develop in the fox’s gut.

Dogs, cats and foxes do not get any symptoms of the disease.

In humans, the parasite develops as a tumor in the liver and can also spread in the body to other organs.
