  • FHM: No reason to worry about the Marburg virus

The outbreak of it the deadly Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea is nothing to worry about in Sweden, according to Klara Sondén, infectious disease doctor and investigator at the Public Health Agency.

    – The risk of spread is extremely minimal. In such cases it would be through an individual traveller. But that risk is small, not least because we don’t travel much to Equatorial Guinea.

Even if the virus were to spread to Europe, it would probably not be as deadly here.

    – We actually know quite a bit about how high the mortality rate would be in our context, with fully equipped healthcare and with all the necessary resources. Then it is very likely that the mortality rate would be significantly lower.

Outbreaks of Marburg are very rare, which also means that not much is known about the virus.

    – It is a relatively unknown disease. Simply because the few eruptions we have seen have been quite small. But we work actively with our environmental monitoring and we already have the opportunity to diagnose Marburg. That way, if we suspect the disease, we can ensure the diagnosis around the clock, says Klara Sondén.

Later this afternoon, the WHO will hold a crisis meeting regarding the outbreak.

The European Parliament has voted to ban the sale of new fossil-powered cars after 2035.

This means that all new cars sold within the Union from the year 2035 must be emission-free.

Europe thus becomes the first continent to take that step.

  • Billström on Finland going ahead: “No question”

After Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Finland could possibly join NATO before Sweden during today’s defense minister’s meeting, Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) is now commenting on the statement.

    – It is nothing new. We have a situation where we naturally have an ambition that we should implement this together, but you must not forget that it is a national decision how you choose to join NATO. We do not own that process and we do not own the entire Turkish ratification. It is a Turkish issue, he tells Swedish daily newspaper.

    He continues:

    – In some sense, I think it is a non-issue. We naturally have the ambition to work together with the project to become members. But it is always a national decision that needs to be made by the respective country’s parliament, he tells the newspaper.
