  • The Minister of Culture rages after tourist carving at the Colosseum

Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano demands that a man who was filmed carving his fiancee’s name into the classical amphitheater Colosseum in Rome be identified and punished, writes CNN.

“I think it is very serious, undignified and very rude that a tourist defiles one of the world’s most famous places, a historical heritage like the Colosseum, by carving his fiancee’s name,” the culture minister wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Sangiuliano also writes that his hope is that the perpetrator will be identified and punished in accordance with Italian law.

The Twitter post from the minister also included a blurred image depicting the young tourist and also a video which is said to show the suspected perpetrator carving letters into one of the walls of the 2,000-year-old amphitheater.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, it now reads “Ivan+Haley 23” on one of the walls of the Colosseum.

If the carver is identified and convicted of the measure, he can be punished with up to five years in prison or a fine of more than SEK 150,000. (TT)
