Research on the chimpanzees at Furuvik is suspended

today at 11.53 Anna Sjögren

The incident at Furviksparken causes Lund University to stop research collaboration, TT reports.

The reason is the police’s report of a violation of the Animal Protection Act and the County Administrative Board’s investigation.

– The department decided that we are suspending the work with the chimpanzees while waiting to see how it goes with the report that the police drew up as well as the county board’s upcoming investigation, says Mathias Osvath, one of the researchers to TT.

It was on Wednesday that five chimpanzees escaped from their enclosures and four of them were shot. Three of them died. The injury status of the fourth is unclear, but it is feared that it too may be dead.

Mathias Osvath has followed the chimpanzees and their behavior for several years and calls what happened deeply tragic.

That a chimpanzee is injured is something that the others are probably aware of.

– That someone is injured, or worse, is something that chimpanzees can take into account. So do dogs and many other animals. At the same time, they have never heard shots or been shot, so the question is whether they understand what has happened, he says.
