The price of red onions has skyrocketed in the Philippines.

One kilo costs 650 pesos, which corresponds to approximately 123 Swedish kronor. This means that onions were three times as expensive as chicken.

Now the Ministry of Agriculture wants to solve the problem by importing 22,000 tons of red onions.

This is reported by the Norwegian economy site E24.

The reason is to try to curb the record high inflation in the country, and the price of red onions is one of the goods that drives the general price increase.

But first the import must be approved by the president.

The country consumes 17,000 tons of onions a month, according to E24.
