It can neither be accused of being particularly mobile nor beautiful.
The locosnäckan’s path to the “Mollusk of the Year” award went through its stomach, reports TT.
The conch, which looks like a cross between a scallop and an oyster, is a popular delicacy in places like South America and Asia, something that seems to have given an advantage. The locos snail received 42 percent of the votes in the competition organized annually by the research institute Loewe Center for Translational Biodiversity Genomics (TDG) in Germany
Opponents like the colorful sea snail Micromelo undatus and leopard snails didn’t stand a chance.
The locos snail, or Chilean abalone as it is also called, will now be genetically encoded at TDG, to see if its genes can be used for future care and treatments on humans. The research team that nominated the Locosnäckan was surprised but happy about the award.
– It feels wonderful. As you can see, “locon” is not the most beautiful mollusk in the world, says J. Antonio Baeza, from Clemson University in South Carolina, and continues: – But I would guess that it is much tastier than a sea snail.

City hall on fire – and 123 police officers injured in France
The city hall of Bordeaux is in flames during the protests against Macron’s pension reform, local media reports.
At the same time, over 123 police officers have been injured during the violence in Paris.

Swedish rocket Bror launched into space
Bror was supposed to be launched into space as early as March 12, but then the weather prevented it.
Instead, it was today that the Swedish research rocket finally had to leave the surface of the earth, writes the Swedish space corporation (SSC) on its website. The launch from the Esrange space center outside Kiruna was broadcast live on Youtube.
Bror is launched by the SSC together with aurora researchers from the Institute for Space Physics. The rocket will study the space closest to Earth, the ionosphere, and the experiments that will be carried out on board will create colorful light phenomena in the sky.
Truck in collision with three cars
A truck and three cars have collided on the E4 outside Skellefteå. The accident happened in the southbound direction.
One person has been taken to hospital, the extent of the injury is unclear, but the person was awake and able to speak.
– We are ready at the scene and traffic is flowing again, says Maria Linné, press spokesperson at the police.
Zebra running loose in Seoul
On Thursday, a zebra could be seen running loose in the streets of Seoul, AP reports.
The zebra, a young male named Sero, had escaped from a zoo, and videos of him trotting and galloping around the city circulated on social media.
It took several hours before they succeeded in sedating him to transport him back to the zoo.
Sero is being examined by vets but is in a stable condition.
Two suspects arrested for attempted murder
The police were alerted to a fight in a residence in Gothenburg.
When they arrived at the scene, it turned out to be two people arguing and both had minor cuts, but no one needed ambulance care.
There were several knives in the apartment.

Black in the box under “Report”

Full chaos in Tel Aviv – several arrested
Tens of thousands of people are protesting around Israel, TT reports.
In Tel Aviv, police fire water cannons at protesters blocking a major road. Several have clashed with the police.
Demonstrations have also been held in Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba.
The protests are against a legal reform planned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The controversial reform means, among other things, that the parliament will be able to reconsider rulings from the Supreme Court – and that politicians will have greater influence over nominations of judges to the same court.
Duda pressures Hungary about NATO
Polish President Andrzej Duda has had a meeting with Hungary’s dito Katalin Novák.
There he has expressed the importance of speeding up Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO accession, writes the president’s office on Twitter.
“A quick accession to the alliance is a guarantee for increasing security in our region”.
Collision between bus and tractor
A bus and a tractor have collided outside Härnösand.
One person has been taken by ambulance to a hospital.
The police currently have no further information about the damage.
The police are on the scene and are investigating the incident.
Several people are arguing on Södermalm
The police have been alerted that several people are arguing outside on Södermalm in Stockholm.
According to the alarm, the accessory must have been used in the fight.
When the police arrived, the people who had been arguing had left the scene.
Stop on the E6 – tanker on fire
A tanker is on fire on the E6 near Löddeköping.
– We have found out that there is lime in it, which is good from a fire point of view. We will be able to turn it off without any problems. says Mattias Sköld, the duty officer of the rescue service.
The driver’s condition is unclear, according to the emergency services.
– We have spoken to the person, but the extent of the damage is unclear.
The E6 has been closed in both directions during the rescue work.

Hello! According to the Swedish Food Agency, there are not unusually many outbreaks now. On the other hand, the most recent outbreaks have occurred at Sweden’s largest facility, which has led to a very large number of eggs being recalled.
