Chris Hipkins, 44, is likely to become the new Prime Minister of New Zealand after Jacinda Ardern’s unexpected resignation on Thursday.
Current Education Minister Hipkins was unanimously nominated by the ruling Labor Party during a meeting on Saturday morning local time, writes The Guardian.
The job of prime minister will be “the greatest responsibility and the greatest privilege of my life,” he told reporters after the party’s nomination.

Search work ends after avalanche
The search effort for survivors of Tuesday’s avalanche in Tibet has been called off, the state-controlled New China News Agency reports. A total of 28 people have so far been confirmed dead.
The avalanche occurred at the entrance to a car tunnel at an altitude of 3,000 meters in south-eastern Tibet. According to local authorities, it was caused by strong winds and rising temperatures.
Avalanches are relatively common in the Himalayas, last October 26 people died in an avalanche on the Indian side of the mountain massif. (TT)
Shooting in Malmö
The police received several calls about loud bangs in Rosengård in Malmö on Friday evening.
At the scene, the police have found empty shell casings on the ground, but no one has been reported injured, writes Sydsvenskan. The alarm came in around 11:30 p.m.
– We are on site and can confirm that there has been a shooting outside. Possibly against a building. There are no people injured at the moment, as far as we know, says police spokesperson Patric Fors to the newspaper. (TT)
New shooting in Stockholm
A villa in Botkyrka south of Stockholm was shelled during the night.
The police received the alarm at 01:45.
– Shots have been fired at the house and there have been people inside the home. But we have no injuries, says Mikael Pettersson, RLC commander at the police in Stockholm.
Musk defends tweet about Tesla
Elon Musk has testified to defend a 2018 Twitter post about buying Tesla out of the New York Stock Exchange.
The post didn’t completely unexpectedly send the stock soaring, only to then plummet just as quickly. A number of investors have now taken Musk to federal court as they believe the billionaire is responsible for their financial losses.
Musk, who bought Twitter last year, has already paid a fine to the US financial watchdog SEC for the post in a separate lawsuit. (TT)

Callers from an apartment building in Skarpnäck in southern Stockholm state that they heard a loud bang.
At the scene, the police find that a detonation has taken place in a stairwell in an apartment building.
They write that on their website.
According to information to Aftonbladet, the police suspect that someone threw a hand grenade.
There is currently no information that anyone has been injured.

According to information, a Volvo must have left the scene at high speed after the suspected shooting.
A man in his 40s was found dead at the scene.
“Despite life-saving efforts, his life could not be saved,” the police announced.

Turkey demands that Sweden stop Paludan
The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned Sweden’s ambassador today, reports the AFP news agency and refers to diplomatic sources.
The purpose must have been to stop right-wing extremist Rasmus Paludan’s planned Koran burning outside the Turkish embassy tomorrow.
According to AFP, Ankara’s message to the ambassador was that it “expects that Stockholm will not allow the protest to be carried out”.

Taxi driver abused by customer
A taxi driver has been abused by a customer on Borgaregatan in Gothenburg, according to the police.
The perpetrator jumped off at Olskroken and then disappeared from the scene.
The alarm came in at 19.11 and a report of assault has been drawn up.
No one has been arrested.
Fire in apartment building – residents evacuated from balcony
There was a fire in an apartment building in Bjärnum outside Hässleholm this evening.
Police, emergency services and ambulance were called at 18.45.
The fire was fully developed and the residents had to be evacuated, including from a balcony, writes Northern Scania.
A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital by ambulance. He is said to have been in the apartment where there was a fire.
The police cannot comment on the state of the damage.

The car is said to have crashed at Gullmarsplan and they were said to have been able to arrest two people there.

The Prime Minister is fined – was not wearing a seat belt

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak yesterday posted a video of himself on social media in which he is sitting in the back seat of a moving car.
But he made a mistake – in the film it is clearly visible that the prime minister is not wearing a seat belt.
Now he has to pay a fine, writes BBC.
Sunak has apologized and said he had poor judgement.
In Great Britain, passengers without a seat belt can be fined 100 pounds, equivalent to 1,200 kroner.
But it does not affect the poor. Sunak, who comes from the world of finance, is one of Britain’s richest men, worth £730 million.
