At least 17 dead in bus accident
At least 17 people died when a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck in a tunnel in northwest Pakistan overnight Friday.
The crash occurred in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
“We have transported all the dead and injured to a hospital in Kohat,” says Rehmat Ullah from the rescue service.
Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan.
On Sunday, 40 people died when a bus crashed into a pillar, ran off a bridge and caught fire in Baluchistan province. (TT)
Whale died from debris in the ocean
A sperm whale that washed ashore in Hawaii over the weekend likely died in part because it ate large amounts of fishing nets, plastic bags and other debris in the ocean, according to researchers.
The 17-meter-long, 54-ton whale had enough foreign objects in the opening of its intestinal tract to prevent food from entering, according to Kristi West, director of the University of Hawaii’s Marine Biology Unit.
“The presence of undigested fish and squid provides further evidence that there was a stop,” West said in a statement.
The sperm whale had, among other things, seven types of fishing nets, plastic bags, six catch cages and fishing line in its stomach. (TT)
CIA: Crucial Months in the War
The US intelligence service CIA assesses that the coming months will be “absolutely decisive” for the outcome of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, according to the agency’s head, William Burns.
– We assess that the decision will take place on the battlefield in the next six months, says Burns during a conversation at a university in Washington DC, according to CNN.
The CIA assesses that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not serious about peace negotiations, he adds. (TT)
Chinese spy balloon discovered in the US
Something suspected to be a Chinese spy balloon is floating high above the United States, writes AP.
The Pentagon says it is monitoring and tracking the balloon, but has decided not to shoot it down because it does not want to put people on the ground at risk.
The balloon should be as big as three buses, according to ABC News.
A Pentagon spokesperson says they assume the balloon is flying over sensitive locations to gather information.
Among other things, it has been seen over the Malmstrom military base in Montana, where the US has nuclear missiles placed.
The news about the spy balloon comes just days before Foreign Minister Antony Blinken is expected to travel to China. It is unclear whether this will affect travel plans.
Fire in villa
There is a fire in a villa in a town just north of Kristianstad.
Emergency services, ambulance and police were alerted at 22.45.
According to the fire service, the fire must be fully developed.
Right now it is unclear if anyone is injured.
Man found with stab wounds in villa
At around 10:30 p.m., the police and ambulance were called to a villa in Önnestad outside Kristianstad.
In the villa was a 45-year-old man who was injured with a stabbing weapon.
Ambulance personnel have taken care of the man. At the moment, it is unclear how seriously injured he is.
A man in his 20s has been arrested.
Mostly up on Wall Street
Some New York stock indexes continued to rise on Thursday after the Fed’s rate hike on Wednesday.
The Fed raised by 0.25 percentage points and Wall Street reacted positively. The positive trend thus continued in most areas today.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq fared best with a rise of 3.3 percent, followed by the S&P 500 index which rose 1.5 percent.
However, the Dow Jones fell slightly and closed at minus 0.1 percent.
Facebook and Instagram’s owner company Meta Platforms rallied, rising 23.3 percent after Wednesday’s quarterly report that beat market expectations.
Several other tech companies, such as the communications company Zoom, Google’s owner company Alphabet and Microsoft had a good stock market day with increases of 6.1, 7.3 and 4.7 percent respectively.

The dollar strengthened slightly against the krone during the day – one dollar is traded for 10:37 kroner.
Teacher charged for kicking student in groin
A high school teacher is said to have kicked a student in the groin during a lesson, the teacher who denies the crime is now charged with assault. It reports SVT Uppsala.
The incident took place in the autumn of last year. The teacher denies any crime and says in police questioning that he just nudged the student with his toe.
The teacher admits, however, that he “patted” the student on the cheek after a provocation.
The teacher no longer works at the school.
The stolen swan was helped by the police
A swan was seen wandering around the British city of Plymouth on Wednesday.
According to the police, the swan had been stolen from the port of Plymouth, about three kilometers away, by a drunken man.
Subsequently, man and bird had been involved in a traffic accident, and the police feared that the swan had been injured.
The police drove the swan to the vet – but first they took a picture of the bird in the back seat of the police car.
“Not the usual prisoner!”, writes the police in Plymouth on Twitter.
The man suspected of taking the bird had disappeared from the scene when the police arrived.
New shooting in Malmö

Several shots have been fired inside a stairwell to an apartment building in Malmö. The police were called to the scene after several calls about loud bangs.
– We have a well-measured resource on site, says police spokesperson Rickard Lundqvist.
The incident must have taken place in Rostorp, the same area where the police found a man with a gunshot wound on Wednesday.
– If there is any connection, it is far too early to say, but it is of course not something we ignore.
The police have cordoned off the area.
– There are no reports of anyone being injured.
Later in the evening, two men in their 20s and 35s were arrested in Gullviksborg.
The police are investigating the incident as attempted murder.
Police are reported – accidentally shot inside the police station
Last fall, a police officer accidentally fired a shot inside a police station belonging to the Kronoberg Kalmar police area. It reports P4 Kronoberg.
The shot was fired from a submachine gun in connection with the police making a so-called cartridge out of it.
The incident took place inside an armory and is now reported as a very serious incident.

Freedom of expression and freedom of demonstration are constitutional rights in Finland as well. But the Finnish National Police Board tells the news agency STT that similar protests cannot be approved in Finland.
It would be considered a crime against the peace of faith to burn the Koran.
