Emissions of greenhouse gases in Sweden decreased sharply last year, the Environmental Protection Agency’s preliminary figures show, reports TT.
In total, just over 45 million tonnes of carbon dioxide were released – five percent less compared to the previous year.
– It’s a fairly large reduction, which we didn’t really expect, says Anna-Karin Nyström, head of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s climate unit, to TT.
Today, the National Audit Office presents its review of the government’s efforts to shorten care queues.
The review shows that the investments had little effect, that the waiting times are still long and that the efforts have generally not been effective, according to a press release.
“The continuously deteriorating waiting times since it was regulated by law in 2010 indicate that it is not effective,” writes Riksrevisionen.
The review also shows that the state’s management risks leading to displacement of patients with greater care needs when the care providers try to stay within the time limits.
The National Audit Office also notes that the criteria for starting a standardized care process need to be investigated.
– Waiting times in healthcare are a complex issue. A combination of controls is required for it to function effectively. In our recommendations, we emphasize, among other things, the importance of strengthening follow-up and adapting governance to the regions’ different organizations, working methods and conditions, says Helena Lindberg, auditor general.

During the early summer, Greater Stockholm’s fire service extinguished approximately 20 fires per day, a normal figure for this time of year.
But in recent days, the fire service has put out up to 40 fires per day, according to the report P4 Stockholm.
The reason is the prevailing drought.
– The smallest spark can quickly grow large and become a difficult ground fire, says Björn Westerdahl, head of communications at Greater Stockholm Fire Protection.

Australia has rushed through special legislation that stops the construction of a new Russian embassy in the country, reports The Guardian.
– The government has received clear security advice about the risk posed by a new Russian presence so close to the parliament building, says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The legislation was approved just over an hour after it was presented.
– It was easy. “There is specific land in Canberra that currently has a lease between the National Capital Authority and the Russian Federation and the bill terminates that lease,” Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said.
Russia already has an embassy in the capital, Canberra, which is located approximately 2.5 kilometers from Parliament.
During the night, the rescue service has been busy putting out forest fires in Ljusdal municipality.
– It is significantly bigger than we thought from the beginning, says Stefan Fröborg, emergency commander at the rescue cooperation Gävleborg-Dalarna.
– We had two helicopters that waterbombed late in the evening and by daylight we have four helicopters on the way.
During the night, the humidity is higher and the air is cooler, which reduces the intensity of the fires.
– That is why we are working quite hard to put down the fire before morning.

There is a stop in the train traffic between Stockholm and Östersund, writes SVT Gävleborg.
Fires that spread on the railway between Ljusdal and Ånge are behind the stop.
The emergency services believe that the sparks from the brakes of a passing train set fire to the vegetation.
– It’s a stretch of maybe 12 kilometers that has burned in several places. We have put out the fire in the north and south, but right now in the middle of this stretch there is a fairly large fire that we are trying to put out, says Stefan Fröbom, the rescue service’s emergency manager, to SVT.
There is no forecast for when train services can resume.
