The British Orkney Islands were between the 9th century and 1472 under Danish and Norwegian rule.
Now the question of a reunion with a Nordic country has been raised on the island group just north of Scotland.
Sensing a lack of financial support from mainland Britain – the regional board has tabled a motion to review “alternative governance”.
Among the options that will be reviewed during the week is a possibility for a “Nordic connection” with Denmark, Norway or Iceland, writes BBC.
– We are looking at how we can get the very best position for future generations and for our place in the world, says regional political leader James Stockan.
He talks about a “deep cultural relationship” with the Nordic countries.
– We have been part of the Nordic kingdom much longer than we have been part of Great Britain. In the Orkney Islands, people come up to me in the street and ask when are we going to pay back the dowry, when are we going back to Norway.
According to Stockan, both the British and Scottish governments have “failed terribly” in their support for the island group.
– This is exactly the right moment to explore what is possible.

Biden lost big yesterday and you didn’t want to answer.
Today he lost again in the Supreme Court regarding student loans.
The question is, why don’t you want Swedes to find out when it goes against Biden?
The Nicklas diver
