Last registered stockpile of chemical weapons destroyed

All registered chemical weapons in the world have now been “irreversibly destroyed”, says the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The announcement comes after President Joe Biden announced late on Friday evening that the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky had destroyed the chemical weapons it had stored for decades.

– Today I am proud to announce that the United States has safely destroyed the last munitions in its only remaining stockpile, bringing us one step closer to a world free of the horrors of chemical weapons, Biden said.

Suspected there are more

Among the countries that signed the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which entered into force in 1997, the United States is the last to complete the destruction of its registered weapons of this type.

However, four countries – Myanmar, Russia, Iran and Syria – are still suspected of having stockpiles of chemical weapons that they chose not to report.
