The Last of Us series, adapted from the famous PlayStation classic, will not be released this year, according to the HBO programming chief.

The series, starring Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie), will focus on the events of the first game released in 2013. Set 20 years after modern civilization was destroyed by a deadly virus, Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old girl Ellie from the oppressive quarantine zone to the Fireflies, a cure-seeking organization. What begins as a small business soon becomes a brutal, heart-wrenching journey as both must traverse the USA and depend on each other for survival.
Developed under the leadership of Craig Mazin, who achieved great success with Chernobyl, the script of the series includes Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog, who also wrote the scenario of the games besides Mazin. He will also direct some episodes of the series.
