NORTH KOREA MAY BE CONSIDERED AS A ‘REhearsal of Occupation’
The US Department of Defense announced that the US, South Korean and Japanese navies participated in missile warning, ballistic missile search and tracking exercises on the Hawaiian coast on August 8-14, with the aim of advancing trilateral cooperation.
Although South Korea and the United States describe the “Ulchi Freedom Shield” exercise as a defense exercise, it is noted that North Korea will react to the exercise on the grounds that it considers any exercise by allied forces as a “rehearsal of occupation” and an attempt to deter nuclear weapons.
THE USA ANNOUNCED AFTER WHO JONG UN’S THREATS
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin and his South Korean counterpart, Lee Jong-sup, announced in July that they agreed to strengthen the deterrent stance of the Allies and expand the joint military exercise in the second half of 2022, following threats from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Dialogue on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula stalled after the last meeting in Hanoi in 2019.
