The doctor who identified this variant, the president of the South African Medical Association, Dr. Angelique Coetzee also stated that the distinguishing symptom from other infections was the feeling of itching in the throat.

Coetzee, who said that ‘the patient was not suffering from a sore throat but an itching sensation in the throat’, explained that they were faced with this situation in an Omicron positive male patient. Other symptoms include cough (89%), fatigue (65%), and congestion or runny nose (59%).

In the examination report, shortness of breath (16%), diarrhea (11%) and loss of taste or smell (8%) are also listed as rare symptoms.
