LAST MINUTE Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf dies

It has been announced that the 79-year-old former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, had been treated at a hospital in Dubai for a while and died there.

A retired general, Musharraf came to power in a coup in 1999 and ruled Pakistan from 2001, when he declared himself president, until 2008.

He has been living in Dubai since 2016 due to lawsuits against Musharraf.

WHO IS PERVEZ MUSERREF?

Pervez Musharraf was born in 1943. Pervez Musharraf, a Pakistani soldier and politician, took office in a coup d’état and served as prime minister of Pakistan from 1999-2002 and president of Pakistan from 2001-2008.

Musharraf suspended the constitution and declared a state of emergency in 2007 after opposition to a request for an extension of his mandate.

A year later, Musharraf, who resigned following a bill submitted to parliament for his dismissal, was charged with violating the constitution and treason in 2013.

The trial, which has been repeatedly reopened and postponed since that date, was concluded on 17 December and Musharraf was sentenced to death.

The Supreme Court banned Pervez Musharraf from politics for life on the grounds that he suspended the constitution twice while in power.
