The Hunger Games sparked a wave of sci-fi films that dystopian youth fraction series based. The biggest competitor to Katniss Everdeen’s story has been the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent novels. But we still haven’t seen the end of the story.
In the beginning, success was entirely on the side of the ambitious project. Destiny – Divergent opened in cinemas in 2014 with strong numbers. The sequel The Determination – Insurgent was financially convincing. The studio Lionstage then split the third book into two films on.

Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games have successfully demonstrated that a two-part finale can pay off at the box office. With the divergent series, however, the worst case arrived: Due to the disappointing numbers of Allegiant, the conclusion of the series was never implemented.

Shortly before the home straight, those responsible lost confidence in the brand and Destiny – Ascendant
completely cancelled. And then both rescue attempts on television failed. The first plan was to end the series with a TV movie. Later, a whole series should fix the matter.
However, in December 2018 all plans cancelled. The sci-fi sequel had no future either in cinemas or on television. It doesn’t often happen that established film series fall apart so shortly before their already announced finale – and that several times. Now it’s only a matter of time before the reboot comes.
