Last chance to see the supermoon tonight

Tonight is the very last chance for this year to see the “supermoon” in Sweden.

Where it is starry, you have the best opportunity to aim it.

– Then it is the best chance for a romantic moonlight, says Dainis Dravins, astronomer at Lund University.

In May, the Swedes could see the red superblood moon shining brightly, which Aftonbladet previously reported on. Now another celestial phenomenon – the supermoon – may soon be sighted.

A couple of times a year, the astronomical phenomenon that was last seen in June occurs.

The phenomenon makes the moon look bigger than usual over large parts of the world during the night towards Thursday.

– This is because the moon is closer to the earth than usual, at the same time as it is illuminated, says Dainis Dravins, astronomer at Lund University, to Aftonbladet.

Clear weather increases the chances

The distance to the moon is normally around 40,000 miles. But tonight it is a little closer, which increases the chances of seeing the supermoon.

– Tonight the moon is “only” 35 thousand miles from the earth, says Dainis Dravins.

You have the best chance of seeing the supermoon if the weather is clear. Then both the stars and the moon are more clearly visible.

– It is a really excellent opportunity to observe it everywhere in Sweden tonight, says Dainis Dravins.

In Sweden, the sky is slightly brighter during the summer months. This can mean that the contrasts are not experienced as clearly as during the winter.

“Romantic moonlight”

When to go out to look at the moon? According to the lunar calendar, it is best at 20:38 tonight, but Dainis Dravins says that it is possible to see the phenomenon throughout the night.

– Around midnight, the moon gets light in the middle of the sun, that is when there is the best chance for a romantic moonlight.

Unlike the bright red color of the supermoon, the supermoon is light yellow or white. The chances of aiming for it are just as good throughout Sweden.

– Everywhere it is starry, the supermoon can be seen, says Dainis Dravins.
