Large protests in Venezuela after the contested election

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Monday to protest the presidential election, reports say AP.

The protests in the capital Caracas were initially peaceful until the police blocked the demonstration train. Then a commotion broke out, according to AP. The police then used tear gas, which caused several protesters to throw stones and other objects at the police.

Questioned result

The election was won, according to the country’s electoral commission, by incumbent President Nicolas Maduro. The result has since been questioned from several quarters.

Among other things, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has said that he will not accept Maduro as president if concrete figures cannot be presented, and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is critical of the result.

– We are deeply concerned that the published result does not reflect the will or the votes of the people of Venezuela, he says.
