Thousands of protesters have gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem following Sunday’s announcement that the defense minister is being fired.
According to the AP news agency, they are trying to get into the residence, which is protected by riot-equipped police. The police are using water cannons against the protesters, Haaretz newspaper reports.
At the same time, tens of thousands have gathered in a spontaneous demonstration in Tel Aviv and several thousand in Haifa, among others.
In southern Israel, near the border with Gaza, around a hundred demonstrators block a road in a spontaneous protest. Israeli universities have also announced an indefinite strike.
In New York, Israel’s consul general has resigned from his post in protest against the firing of the defense minister. The purpose is to “stand up for what is right and fight for the democratic values I believe in,” announced Consul General Asaf Zamir, according to Haaretz.
The protests were sparked by Netanyahu’s announcement that he is forcing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant out of the government after he criticized the government’s attempt to change the Supreme Court’s mandate.
Gallant’s move was made on Saturday, as more than 100,000 protesters gathered in Tel Aviv for a large demonstration, similar to those held every Saturday in the country for three months.
