Three stations were called out to the fire at 9 pm on North Street where firefighters found the detached garage “fully engulfed in flames” according to assistant fire chief James Robertson.

“The fire (was) spreading to the nearby house and vehicles in the driveway,” Robertson said in a media release.

“Thanks to the swift actions of firefighters, the blaze was contained before causing significant damage to the residence.”

He said one person was injured and taken to hospital by Norfolk County Paramedic Services but no firefighters were hurt.

The estimated loss to property is $200,000 but, he said, the home is insured.

The fire was on the eve of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-12 and Robertson notes that Norfolk County Fire has responded to more than 70 structure fires over the last year.

“Residents are urged to prioritize fire safety and ensure their homes are equipped with functioning smoke alarms.”
