An attic fire in an apartment building on Hertsön in Luleå spread in the building in a way that could not be stopped on Friday evening, reports Norrbottens-Kuriren.
No one was injured as all residents were able to get out of the three-storey building with three staircases and a total of twelve apartments.
– The building will have to burn down as the fire is not considered possible to stop without such large amounts of water that it would have caused total damage regardless, said Adam Dahlberg, commander of the rescue center to the newspaper at 11pm.
The residents were evacuated to a meeting room in the local church. Those who were unable to arrange their own accommodation during the night have been offered hotel rooms, according to the municipal housing company Lulebo.
It is unclear how the fire started.
