Landslide victory for Croatia’s president | SVT News

With over 90 percent of the votes counted, it is clear. Milanović wins the election with 74 percent of the vote, his opponent Dragan Primorac gets barely 26 percent.

Dragan Primorac, backed by the conservative HDZ that holds the government in Croatia, received just under 20 percent of the vote in the first round of elections two weeks ago.

He has therefore been considered to have little chance of beating Milanović, who with 49 percent of the votes in the first round already secured the win then.

Criticized the sanctions against Russia

Zoran Milanović was previously the leader of the country’s social democratic party but has moved politically and is now sharply critical of both the EU and NATO. He has also criticized the sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine.

The president of Croatia has some power in the country’s foreign and security policy. He is also the commander of the Armed Forces of Croatia.

The polling stations closed at 19:00 Swedish time. By then, just under 44 percent of the eligible voting population had gone to the polls.
