(Finance) – The general Giuseppe Vadalà has been appointed Extraordinary commissioner for the reclamation of the land of fires. The announcement was made by the premier Giorgia Meloni during the Council of Ministerswhich approved the decree law on the public administration, including specific rules to deal with environmental pollution in the area.
The decision arrives in response to the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights of 31 January 2025, which condemned Italy for the failure to adopt adequate measures against pollution of the area. The commissioner will have extraordinary powers and will have to present, within sixty days, a Action plan to the Prime Minister.
Meloni stressed that the institution of a single commissioner aims to overcome the bureaucratic difficulties that have so far slowed down the reclamation operations. The government, with this choice, intends guarantee concrete interventions for environmental restoration of a strongly compromised territory.
