Lambton third in research college rankings

Lambton College remains one of the top research colleges in Canada, according to the latest Research Infosource Inc. rankings.

The firm’s recently released annual top-50 list puts Lambton third in Canada.

The rankings rely heavily on research income, amid other indicators, college officials have said.

Among medium-size colleges, Lambton was first in research partnerships with 287, first in terms of paid student researchers, with 260, and first in Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada income, with $10,606.

The Sarnia school ranked third in completed research projects with 69, second in industry research income with $2,586, sixth in Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada income with $240 — a three-way tie with Loyalist College and RRC Polytech — and third in Canada Foundation for Innovation income with $3,287.

Total sponsored research income at Lambton totaled $14,210, an increase of 13.4 per cent compared to a year earlier, the rankings say.

And with 174 researchers at the school’s Center of Excellence in Energy and Bio-Industrial Technologies, dollars per researcher at Lambton in 2021 worked out to $81.7, the rankings say.

Lambton has been on the top research colleges list for seven consecutive years, college officials said in a press release.

Cégep de Trois-Rivières held onto first place in Canada on this year’s list with $19,864 in sponsored research income while Niagara College moved to second from third with $18,116.

“Our efforts and achievements in research are a constant source of pride for Lambton College,” the school’s president and CEO Rob Kardas said in the news release.

“This ranking is once again representative of the outstanding impact research and innovation has on the success of our students and the growth and prosperity of our community,” he said. “There is a long list of people and organizations who share in this accomplishment, and we extend our gratitude to all of them.”

Officials in the release noted the college’s research and innovation department “continues to experience tremendous growth and success year after year,” adding “it is the experience, expertise and dedication of Lambton’s researchers, staff, faculty, students and partners that continues to ensure the success of the department.”
