The college’s research and innovation department received a National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Synergy Award for Innovation Nov. 6 in Ottawa, college officials said in a news release.
The awards recognize collaborations that result in meaningful impact and positive change, officials said, noting Lambton’s win involved partnering with California-based Origin Materials to optimize the company’s production of chloromethylfurfural.
The plant-based, sustainable compound is used in producing recyclable plastic bottles and other products that combat climate change, college officials said.
Origin selected Lambton’s Bioindustrial Process Research Center to optimize the company’s oxidation pilot plant in Sarnia-Lambton, laying the groundwork for Origin’s commercial scale chloromethylfurfural production facility in Sarnia, officials said in the release.

Production began about a year ago, officials said.
“Lambton College is committed to fostering innovative partnerships that drive economic growth and environmental sustainability, and our collaboration with Origin Materials exemplifies this mission,” college president and CEO Rob Kardas said, in the release.
Bioindustrial Innovation Canada nominated Lambton for the award.
Lambton also recently received a bronze award for applied research and innovation via the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP), college officials said.
Lambton’s award, announced at the WFCP’s World Congress, Sept. 22-27 in Jamaica, was for “demonstrating excellence in addressing real-world challenges through applied research and continued leadership in building robust, client-driven research, providing social, economic, health and environmental benefits to our local and global community,” officials said in a news release.
Lambton also received WFCP applied research and innovation awards in 2022 and 2016. It also won bronze in entrepreneurship in 2016.
