The move to virtual learning comes after a COVID-19 outbreak was declared at the school on Thursday. The decision was made in consultation with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, a statement from the Grand Erie District School Board says.
An outbreak is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and / or staff in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14- day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school . There have been seven cases at the school since Dec. 3.
Teachers at Lakewood will be using D2L Brightspace and other virtual platforms to provide instruction.
The board said the temporary move to remote learning will enable students to remain connected to their classes and their goals.
Plans call for the school to resume in-person learning following the Christmas break on Jan. 3.
The health unit also on Friday (Dec. 10), declared an outbreak at a bus route connected to Lakewood. The cases were identified Thursday (Dec. 9) and the subsequent positive case was connected to the bus route on Friday (Dec. 10).
Meanwhile, the health unit has also told the school board of an additional outbreak connected to previous cases identified at
Valley Heights Secondary School in Langton. The first positive case was identified on Dec. 1 and a second one was confirmed shortly thereafter.
An outbreak at the Langton school was declared Dec. 6.
Valley Heights remains open for those students and staff not required
to self-isolate. Grand Erie custodians continue to complete their disinfecting of the school
each night.
As well, the board has provided the health unit with class lists, transportation records and childcare
information to support case management and contact tracing.
