In a long interview with Elle magazine, actress and top model Laëtitia Casta admits to suffering from dyslexia since her childhood. What is this language disorder? How is it diagnosed and what are the strategies to best correct it? Explanations.

“I make my loved ones laugh a lot, but it’s always in spite of myself! Stuff escapes me and I only understand afterwards why I said or did something funny. I think it’s due to my dyslexia that no one diagnosed when I was little”.

In the columns of Elle magazine, Laëtitia Casta returns to this disorder that has always followed her: dyslexia. “My brain has been made oddly, which fortunately does not show in the work, but in private, it gives me a way of speaking, and especially of getting angry, which pisses everyone off. Not very credible to put on mad when you’re the princess of Motordu!” she laughs.

    What is dyslexia?

Belonging to the family of dys disorders, such as dysorthography, dyscalculia or dysphasia, dyslexia is a disorder that affects reading, with inversions of sounds, letters but also spelling mistakes and sometimes illegible writing.

It is considered a disability, hereditary with a genetic origin, which cannot be cured. Indeed, dyslexia is a neurological disorder, linked to the cerebral functioning of the affected person.

    Different types of dyslexia

There are three main forms of dyslexia: phonological dyslexia, superficial dyslexia and mixed dyslexia, which is a mixture of the first two.

    • Phonological dyslexia: this is the most common. It causes slowness in reading and difficulty in recognizing new words.
    • Superficial dyslexia is a selective handicap in their ability to read words with irregular pronunciation.

For people affected by dyslexia, whatever the type, communicating information, retaining it, understanding it or modifying it is difficult.

Before making a diagnosis of dyslexia, it must first be ensured that no other deficiency, which could cause these reading difficulties, is present. It is therefore necessary to rule out any visual or hearing impairment or any other handicap or intellectual deficit in the child. When all the other causes are ruled out, we can evoke the track of dyslexia.

Support is provided by rehabilitation sessions with the speech therapist. And in general, the earlier it is set up, the more it helps the child in his or her school career. Books for children, specifically dedicated to dys disorders, are also commercially available. Finally, it is useful to talk about the child’s difficulties with his teacher(s), so that he is not penalized for his mistakes.
