Lady Diana already wore this skirt trend in the 80s

Straight out of Lady Diana’s wardrobe, this skirt is the star of the season. And it could well replace the mini…

Because fashion is an eternal beginning, an essential trend from the 1980s has decided to resurface with the arrival of sunny days. This is the balloon skirt.

Although it was born in the 1950s under the leadership of designers Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Pierre Cardin, this piece had to wait a few more decades before becoming trendy. It owes its popularity to Lady Diana, who appeared wearing the said piece during the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 1987. With its very specific cut combining puffy volume, pleated fabric and rounded shape, she was on all the dance floors of the time before completely disappearing from the fashion radar. But that was without counting the fall-winter 2024-2025 fashion shows who brought the balloon skirt, also called “bubble skirt” by the Anglo-Saxons, back into fashion. The proof ? We could see it in an ultra short version on the Miu Miu catwalk, inflated to the max at Coperni, mid-length and elegant for Proenza Schouler or even vaporous at Marine Serre.

Where to shop for the perfect balloon skirt?

If there is a balloon skirt to treat yourself to make the hit of the season your own, it’s the simple black version offered by Zara. In addition to featuring an elastic waistband and tone-on-tone lining, it is available at just 25.95 euros. And good news, the Spanish giant offers the ball skirt in different variations. We find it in a mini version, but also mid-length, colorful, embroidered with sequins, in a dress or even in a jort (i.e. a short skirt) depending on your desires. In the same vibe than that of Zara, we spotted some at Stradivarius, H&M, Bershka and Na-Kd. Our style advice? Combine this voluminous piece with a basic white T-shirt and kitten heels for a perfect babydoll look.
