Lack of popular item – again

Lack of popular item again

During last year’s surströmming premiere in August, the shop shelves echoed empty of the beloved and hated fish delicacy. The lack of surströmming meant that private individuals, who managed to get their hands on a can, sold the fish for thousands of kroner via services such as Blocket and Tradera.

– The median price has risen by 127 percent this year compared to the same period last year, said Ebba Rosencrantzpress officer at Blocket, to News24 then.

And now it looks like there will be a shortage again.

There is a continued shortage of currents along the coast of Norrland, reports SVT, which has also been in contact with Jan Söderström who runs Oskar’s surströmming in Tynderö northeast of Sundsvall.

– I would be very happy if I am wrong, but it looks the same as last year, he tells the channel.

According to Söderström, the fishermen who deliver sturgeon to the factory will not manage to collect more than a fifth of the amount produced in 2021. He is therefore critical of how politicians have handled the issue of fishing on the northern coast.

– It’s about to go to hell, nobody cares about the coastal fishermen, he says SVT.
